The route that made West Arunachal famous — over Sela Pass to the largest monastery in India, and up to the Bumla trijunction where the road simply stops.
This itinerary has been personally crafted by the Founder of Ela Tripo after travelling this route multiple times and building strong local connections across West Arunachal.
It is designed to offer one of the most unique and well-curated experiences you’ll find in North-East India, while covering all the major highlights so you truly tick every box.

The route
The stops this trip is built around, in order. Your day-by-day plan, stays and pace come with your free quote.
Start · 180 ft · Kamrup
The gateway to the whole region and worth a day of its own. Kamakhya sits on Nilachal hill above the city, one of the most important Shakta temples in India; Umananda occupies a small island in the Brahmaputra reached by ferry.

699 ft
5,118 ft · West Kameng
A valley town of apple orchards, kiwi vines and hot springs, with a 500-year-old dzong above the old settlement. Most Tawang itineraries stop here to break the climb, which is also the sensible way to handle the altitude.

13,681 ft · Between Dirang and Tawang
The only road crossing into Tawang, and one of the highest motorable passes in the country. Sela Lake sits frozen beside it for much of the winter. Jaswant Garh, the memorial to a soldier who held this ground alone in 1962, is a short drive below on the Tawang side.

10,000 ft · Tawang district
The monastery here was founded in the 1680s and remains the largest in India and the second largest in the world, holding an eight-metre gilded Buddha and a library of manuscripts. The town below it sits in a bowl of ridges that hold snow well into April.

15,200 ft · India–China border, north of Tawang
The highest point any of our routes reach. The road simply stops at the trijunction, where Indian and Chinese posts face each other across a line of stones. Sangetsar — usually called Madhuri Lake — lies on the same excursion.

6,234 ft · West Kameng
Two quiet valleys on the western side of the Tawang road, worked by the Sherdukpen and Monpa. Apple and kiwi orchards, trout in the streams, and homestays that are still houses rather than hotels.

“Our trip to Guwahati and Arunachal Pradesh was nothing short of magical, filled with breathtaking landscapes, spiritual experiences, and unforgettable memories.
We began our journey with the divine blessings at the sacred Kamakhya Temple in Guwahati, where the peaceful atmosphere and spiritual energy made for a truly enriching experience. From there, we headed into the mesmerizing mountains of Arunachal Pradesh
Tawang was absolutely stunning, with its serene beauty, rich culture, and spectacular monasteries. Driving through Sela Pass was a dream come true, offering panoramic views that left us speechless. The visit to Bumla Pass, located near the Indo-China border, was another unforgettable highlight, making us appreciate the beauty and significance of this remarkable region.
What made the entire trip even more special was the luxurious stay arrangements and seamless travel experience. Every hotel was comfortable, well-chosen, and offered exceptional hospitality, allowing us to relax after each day's adventure.
A heartfelt thank you to Ela Tripo for meticulously planning and executing such a wonderful itinerary. From transportation and accommodations to sightseeing, everything was handled with professionalism and care.
